Dispute over political rivalry sparks controversy.

Jonathan Head reports that Cambodia and Thailand have a history of occasional conflict over disputed border areas, with previous clashes resulting in casualties. Despite efforts to ease tensions, a recent border skirmish escalated into a larger conflict after a landmine explosion injured Thai soldiers. The situation worsened following the leaking of a phone conversation between Cambodian leader Hun Sen and Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, causing public anger and bilateral tensions. Thailand recalled its ambassador and began investigating powerful Cambodian business figures. Neither side shows signs of stepping back, with Cambodia’s Hun Sen accusing Thaksin Shinawatra of insulting the Thai monarchy and threatening the economic stability of both countries. Experienced politicians in both countries may eventually resolve the conflict, but the reasons behind Hun Sen’s decision to escalate tensions remain unclear.
