Four people, including the grandparents of Emile Soleil, have been apprehended in connection with the toddler’s disappearance and death in the French Alps in July 2023. Of the other two individuals arrested, prosecutors have stated that they are the adult children of Emile’s grandparents, facing charges of voluntary homicide and concealing a corpse. The lawyer for Emile’s grandparents, Isabelle Colombani, has thus far declined to comment on the recent development, stating that she had only just learned of it.
Several months ago, some of the toddler’s bones and clothing were discovered by a hiker near the home of Emile’s maternal grandparents in the French Alps, where they had gone missing the previous summer. At the time, prosecutors noted the remains provided no further clues as to the cause of Emile’s death, suggesting that it may have resulted from a fall, manslaughter, or murder. The sudden turn of events in this seemingly cold case has dominated media coverage in France, where the search for Emile has been extensively reported. The last sighting of Emile was on 7 July 2023, when two neighbors saw him walking alone on the village’s only street. Following his disappearance, Emile’s grandmother alerted the police, and a search effort was quickly mobilized. Initially, much of the focus was on Emile’s grandfather; however, it is now revealed that his lawyer hoped investigators would not solely concentrate on him, potentially overlooking other avenues of inquiry. Amidst the ongoing investigation, Emile’s remains were eventually found, and the toddler’s funeral took place in February of this year. Following the service, Emile’s maternal grandparents expressed a need for “answers” and the “truth”, stating that they had endured 19 months without any definitive information or resolution.
Aix-en-Provence Chief Prosecutor Jean-Luc Blachon stated that Tuesday’s arrests were the result of recent investigations, though investigators remain focused on exploring “several areas” of the region. French media have reported that the grandparents’ home in Provence is being searched, and one of their vehicles has been seized. While the concept of “arrest” in France typically implies a suspicion of crime involvement, it does not necessarily indicate the initiation of legal proceedings against the individuals in question.
