European leaders have shown their support for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky following a heated encounter between Zelensky and former US President Donald Trump at the White House. Germany, France, Spain, Poland, and the Netherlands’ leaders posted messages on social media in support of Ukraine, with Zelensky thanking each one for their backing.
Zelensky is set to travel to London this weekend to attend a summit hosted by UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, who has expressed his unwavering support for Ukraine. This visit comes after a tense meeting in the Oval Office where Trump encouraged Zelensky to make a deal with Russia, warning that if not, “we are out.”
During the meeting, Trump criticized Zelensky for being ungrateful for US support and accused him of risking World War Three. In response, Zelensky directly thanked each leader that voiced their support on social media. Macron, Schoof, Scholz, Sanchez, Tusk, von der Leyen, Trudeau, and others expressed their support for Ukraine, with Orban voicing his support for Trump.
After leaving the White House, Zelensky thanked Trump for US support, stating that Ukraine needs a just and lasting peace. He emphasized the importance of being heard and represented globally. In an interview with Fox News, Zelensky acknowledged the tense relationship with Trump but remained hopeful that it could be salvaged.
The conversation at the White House turned sour when US Vice President JD Vance suggested diplomacy as a solution to end the war, to which Zelensky responded by questioning the effectiveness of diplomacy. Meloni, Italy’s prime minister, has called for an urgent summit between the US, Europe, and allies on Ukraine. The upcoming summit at Downing Street will focus on policing a potential Ukraine peace deal and discussions about using US military assets for surveillance, intelligence, and possibly warplanes to deter Russian actions.
