A federal judge in Manhattan has permanently dismissed the criminal case against New York City Mayor Eric Adams, following the Trump administration’s directive for prosecutors to drop corruption charges. This decision prompted the resignation of Manhattan’s top federal prosecutor, who accused Adams of colluding with the Trump administration to have his case dismissed in exchange for overseeing immigration enforcement.
In his ruling, US District Judge Dale Ho stated that the Justice Department did not contest Adams’ motion for permanent dismissal. Judge Ho emphasized that reviving the case in the future could lead to the perception that Adams’ freedom hinges on his willingness to enforce the immigration priorities of the Trump administration, potentially making him more accountable to federal demands than his own constituents’ wishes.
Adams was originally charged with conspiring with Turkish citizens to receive gifts totaling over $100,000 in exchange for favors. He has consistently denied any wrongdoing. With the case dismissed “with prejudice,” the Department of Justice cannot resurrect the charges against Adams based on the same evidence.
