Five Fatalities Result from Tour Bus Accident on New York Highway

Five individuals have lost their lives after a tour bus crashed on the New York State Thruway in western New York, according to information provided by the New York State Police.
The group was traveling back from Niagara Falls, located on the US-Canada border, to New York City when witnesses observed the vehicle lose control and overturn. The majority of the victims, as stated by the police, are tourists from India, China, and the Philippines.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul mentioned that local authorities are actively working to rescue and offer assistance to everyone involved.
Emergency responders, including ambulances and medical helicopters, were dispatched to the crash site, which is situated near the town of Pembroke, approximately 30 miles (48km) east of Buffalo.
Initially, police had reported that a child was among the deceased; however, they have now confirmed that this information is inaccurate.
The 52 passengers on board at the time of the crash were aged between one and 74, confirmed by the police.
Some victims were thrown out of the vehicle upon impact, and it is believed that most were not wearing seatbelts.
Others remained trapped inside the wreckage for several hours.
To facilitate the investigation, translators and translation devices were brought to the scene and hospitals.
Andre Ray major, New York State Police troop commander, stated during a news conference, “The cause of the collision is still under investigation. However, mechanical failure as well as operator impairment have been ruled out at this time. The operator has been cooperative and with the investigation still underway. No charges have been filed at this point.”
The bus crash occurred approximately 40 miles away from Niagara Falls, a prominent tourist destination on the US-Canada border.
The bus was traveling eastbound when it lost control, veering into the median and then into a ditch, according to the police.
Multiple children were present on the bus at the time of the crash, police reported.
Twenty-four adult patients were admitted to one local hospital and are expected to make a full recovery. Other hospitals in the area also received patients, including those under the age of 16, who were taken to a children’s hospital.
A witness named Powell Stephens informed The Buffalo News that he saw a bus lying on its side and items strewn across the roadway after the crash.
“There was glass all over the road and people’s belongings scattered on the road,” said Powell Stephens, who drove past the crash site. “The windows were shattered. Everyone appeared to be conscious and okay, but I only witnessed the scene for about 15 seconds.”
ConnectLife, an organization that supplies blood to hospitals in the region, has issued an urgent appeal for blood donations, emphasizing that the community is facing a crisis.
“This is a moment when your action can directly save lives,” said Sarah Diina, a spokeswoman for ConnectLife.
The Red Cross has established a family reunification center to assist in connecting children and parents who were separated and transported to different hospitals.
Authorities are requesting drivers with dashcam footage of the crash to come forward and assist in their investigation.
