James Comey is being investigated by the Secret Service after sharing and later deleting a social media post that Republicans claim incited violence against President Donald Trump. Comey posted a photo of seashells on Instagram with the numbers “8647” and captioned it as a “cool shell formation” from his beach walk. However, the number 86 is a slang term that can mean “to reject” or “to get rid of,” and is also recently used as a term meaning “to kill.” Trump is the 47th US president, and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem alleged that the message was a call for the assassination of Trump, although Comey stated that he opposed violence. The Secret Service is investigating the social media posts and takes such rhetoric seriously. Comey deleted the post, stating that he didn’t realize the numbers had an association with violence. Trump has survived two assassination attempts in the past. The FBI is aware of the post and is in communication with the Secret Service, emphasizing that they will provide all necessary support. The Department of Homeland Security is also investigating the matter. White House Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino accused Comey of making a plea to bad actors or terrorists to assassinate the president during Trump’s international tour. The president’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., also responded, commenting on Comey’s casual call for his father’s murder. Comey served as the FBI director from 2013 to 2017, during which he oversaw the inquiry into Hillary Clinton’s email. He was later fired by Trump amid an investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.
