A New York City police officer, Didarul Islam, was among four people killed in a shooting at a Midtown Manhattan office building. The gunman, Shane Devon Tamura, 27, entered the building with an MR rifle in plain sight, spraying bullets in the lobby and on an upper floor before taking his own life.
Those inside the building took shelter as gunfire echoed, with some barricading themselves into offices. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated the suspect had a documented mental health history and traveled from Las Vegas, stopping in several states before arriving in New York.
Officer Islam worked security at the building at the time of the attack. He was killed as he lived – a hero. With an immigrant background from Bangladesh and a family of four, Islam gave the ultimate sacrifice.
