Romania’s Justice Minister Radu Marinescu has demanded a public explanation for why Andrew and Tristan Tate, social media influencers facing human trafficking charges, were allowed to leave the country despite a travel ban. The brothers, who are also facing charges in the US and UK, were under travel restrictions for over two years before their ban was lifted, allowing them to fly to the United States. Marinescu has called on the special prosecution service, Dilcot, to investigate and uncover the truth. Andrew and Tristan Tate deny the allegations against them.
The brothers, dual US-UK citizens, were initially arrested in Romania in 2022 on charges of human trafficking, forming an organized group to sexually exploit women, and rape. They also face civil and criminal charges in the US and UK. Despite ongoing investigations, the travel ban against them was lifted and their US passports returned, raising concerns about potential political pressure from the Trump administration. Romania’s justice minister warned that the Tate brothers risk pre-trial detention if they fail to return to face continued investigation. This incident has sparked outrage among Romanians who believe there is a different set of laws for the wealthy and influential compared to ordinary citizens.
