Injuries and fatalities have been confirmed following a dramatic drone assault on Moscow and the surrounding area.

A recent drone attack in Moscow and its surrounding region has resulted in at least one death and three injuries, according to local authorities. The attack, described as “massive,” occurred overnight, mainly targeting the towns of Vidnoye and Domodedovo, which are close to the capital. Seven apartments in a residential building were reportedly damaged as a consequence.

According to Moscow’s Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, 73 drones that were heading towards the city were successfully shot down. However, the debris from the drones still caused damage to the roof of one building. Additionally, a suspension in service has been observed in one of the district’s train networks, and flight restrictions have been put in place at Moscow’s airports following this attack, which is considered one of the largest since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The timing of this attack is notable, as it comes just a few hours before a significant meeting between representatives from the United States and Ukraine in Saudi Arabia, aimed at finding a resolution to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

Governor Vorobyev shared images on social media, claiming to show one of the damaged apartments and burnt vehicles in what appears to be a car park in the Moscow region. He also mentioned that 12 people, including three children, had to be evacuated from their damaged apartments following the overnight strike.

Flight restrictions have also been enforced at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, and Vnukovo airports, which are crucial transport hubs servicing millions of passengers annually. As of now, Ukraine has not officially commented on the incident.
