Intensifying Conflicts Result in Escalating Casualties and Mass Displacement

Thailand and Cambodia experienced a second day of fighting on Friday, resulting in the deaths of at least 16 individuals and the displacement of thousands. World leaders have urged a ceasefire amidst this escalating conflict between the two countries, which has been ongoing for over a century.

Malaysia’s Prime Minister, Anwar Ibrahim, called on both nations to immediately halt hostilities. The US, China, Australia, the European Union, and France also expressed their concern and called for peace. The United Nations Security Council is expected to hold a meeting over the conflict this Friday, with Cambodia’s Prime Minister, Hun Manet, urging the council to intervene and stop Thailand’s aggression.

The disagreement between the countries dates back to the French occupation of Cambodia, when the borders were drawn. Sporadic clashes have occurred over the years, resulting in the loss of lives on both sides. Tensions escalated in May after a Cambodian soldier was killed in a clash, causing bilateral ties to reach their lowest point in over a decade.
