A man convicted of stealing millions of dollars worth of jewelry from reality TV star Kim Kardashian has died just one month after being found guilty, according to French media. Didier Dubreucq, 69, was suffering from lung cancer while in detention prior to his trial and had been undergoing chemotherapy. In May, he and seven others were found guilty of the high-profile Paris heist, in which millions of dollars worth of jewelry was stolen from Kardashian nearly a decade ago. Dubreucq had denied any involvement in the heist, telling the court during his testimony that it was a case of mistaken identity. Due to his chemotherapy, Dubreucq was not present for sentencing, but was given a seven-year sentence from the judge, with five years suspended. He did not have to return to prison as he had already spent two years in pre-trial detention. Other suspects received similar suspended sentences, and Judge David De Pas stated that the state of health of the main protagonists prohibited incarceration. Kardashian testified that she was bound and had a gun held to her head during the robbery, and that the thieves stole $10m worth of her jewelry, including a $4m engagement ring. Kardashian called the crime “the most terrifying experience of my life” and said it had a lasting impact on her and her family.
