Pedestrian crossings in northern California have been hacked, playing fake greetings that mock tech billionaires Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg. The messages were noticed in Palo Alto, Redwood City, and Menlo Park over the weekend. Some of the messages included offers to buy a Tesla Cybertruck and false claims about being friends with Musk, and others advertised inserting AI “into every facet of your conscious experience” while impersonating Zuckerberg. Engineers have disabled the audio feature on the crossings and investigators are looking into how the tampering occurred. The messages were played in areas close to where both billionaires have business interests. Neither Musk nor Zuckerberg have commented on the incident. At least 12 crossings in Palo Alto’s downtown area were affected, and the issue may have occurred on Friday. The city of Palo Alto and local media have reported hacking in Redwood City as well.
