The animated musical film KPop Demon Hunters has achieved the impressive feat of becoming the most viewed movie on Netflix, according to the streaming platform.
Since its release in June, the movie has been watched over 236 million times, surpassing the action comedy Red Notice to take the top spot.
KPop Demon Hunters, which follows the adventures of a K-pop girl band using their music and fighting skills to protect humans from demons, has become a global sensation.
The film’s songs have also gained popularity, with tracks on Spotify becoming some of the most streamed online, and “Golden” reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 earlier this month.
Produced by Sony Pictures Animation, the movie premiered at Netflix’s Tudum theatre in Los Angeles but gained momentum through word of mouth and viral content on social media.
Many have praised the film for its animation and depiction of traditional and modern Korean culture. The catchy K-pop songs have been a major attraction, with some of the soundtrack’s producers and songwriters being industry veterans who have worked with groups like BTS and Twice.
Co-director Maggie Kang stated that the filmmakers wanted the music to be extraordinary and resonate with K-pop fans.
Netflix released a sing-along version in cinemas in various countries, leading to the platform’s first number one film at the US box office. The sing-along version was then made available worldwide on the platform.
Several songs from the soundtrack have entered the top 10 of Spotify’s global chart, with “Golden” still holding the number one spot. This achievement has made Huntr/x and Saja Boys, the fictional boy band from the film, the highest-charting female and male K-pop groups in US Spotify history, surpassing real-life groups such as BTS and Blackpink.
The soundtrack also holds the record for having four simultaneous Top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100.
Discussions about a film sequel are reportedly underway.
