Red alerts for flooding and landslides were issued for parts of Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna.
Torrential rain prompted flooding and landslides in regions of northern Italy, with Florence and Pisa among the affected cities. Local authorities issued high alert levels.
Heavy rainfall in Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna is expected to continue into the afternoon. Local services are on high alert, advising residents to exercise caution.
Some areas of Bologna experienced landslides and mudslides, leading to evacuation before heavy rain overnight. No casualties were reported, and the worst flooding in Bologna passed by mid-morning on Friday.
A family of four was rescued from a landslide in Badia Prataglia, Tuscany. The national fire brigade responded to multiple calls prompted by the Rimaggio flooding near Florence, which flowed through Sesto Fiorentino. In Pisa, flood defenses were erected along the Arno River as it exceeded its first flood-risk level.

Efforts to lower the level of the Arno River, pictured here in Florence, were under way after torrential rain.
Additionally, roads suffered from flooding and fallen trees, with residents in Florence advised to avoid all travel as the A1 motorway was partially closed.
Over 60 municipalities in Tuscany closed schools, and several University of Florence campuses were shut down due to the severe weather conditions.
The red weather alert, indicating a serious risk of extreme and widespread flooding, was expected to persist throughout the day.
Some rivers in Emilia-Romagna were already swollen from prior rainfall. More than 1,000 people were evacuated from their homes in the region in September 2024 following Storm Boris.
The preceding year, 13 fatalities occurred after a day and a half’s worth of rainfall equivalent to six months fell on the region. Twenty rivers overflowed and there were approximately 280 landslides.
