Norwegian Resident awakens to Discover Massive Shipping Vessel in Backyard

A man in Norway, Johan Helberg, experienced an extraordinary and surreal incident when he awoke to find a massive container ship had run aground and crashed into his front garden. The 135-meter (443-foot) ship narrowly missed Helberg’s house by meters at approximately 5:00 a.m. local time (3:00 a.m. GMT) on Thursday. Helberg was alerted to the commotion by his panicked neighbor, who had witnessed the ship heading straight for the shore in Byneset, near Trondheim.

describes the moment he went to the window and was astonished to see the towering ship: “I had to bend my neck to see the top of it. It was so unreal.” Helberg revealed in an interview with the Guardian that just a few meters further south, the ship could have entered his bedroom. Fortunately, he didn’t hear anything.

A neighbor, Jostein Jorgensen, was awakened by the sound of the ship approaching and rushed to alert Helberg, ringing his doorbell repeatedly without success. It was only when Jorgensen called him on the phone that he managed to contact him.

The Cypriot-flagged cargo ship, the NCL Salten, had 16 people on board and was traveling south-west through the Trondheim Fjord to Orkanger when it went off course. No injuries were reported, according to AFP news agency. The cause of the crash remains unknown, and Norwegian police are investigating the incident.

Helberg humorously remarked, “It’s a very bulky new neighbor, but it will soon go away,” highlighting the temporary nature of the monumental presence in his garden. It has been reported that the ship had previously run aground in 2023 but managed to free itself under its own power.
