Ongoing Conflict in Myanmar Persists Despite Ceasefire Agreements Following Earthquake Briefings

Fighting continues in Myanmar despite the military junta and a rebel group alliance agreeing to temporary ceasefires for earthquake relief efforts. The military is accused of launching at least 14 attacks since the ceasefire, according to the UN Human Rights office. The military and rebel groups blame each other for the ongoing violence. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has urged for a halt to all military operations and a focus on assisting those affected by the earthquake. Ongoing civil war between the junta and ethnic militias has only worsened the situation. The military proclaimed a 20-day ceasefire on April 2nd, following a similar announcement by rebel groups. As of now, over 3,500 deaths have been reported due to the earthquake, with thousands injured and missing. Rescue operations are ongoing, but may be hampered by rainfall. The UN Humanitarian Chief, Tom Fletcher, highlights the need for basic needs like food and shelter in affected areas. Aftershocks are still occurring, causing additional distress in a country already facing a compounding crisis of earthquake, conflict, and existing needs.
