The Nuremberg Tiergarten zoo in southern Germany culled 12 Guinea baboons due to overcrowding in their enclosure, which led to increased conflicts among the animals. The zoo’s decision was allegedly supported by the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA), and it stated that no other place was available to relocate the animals. Seven animal rights activists protested against the decision, and one woman even glued her hands to the ground near the entrance. The zoo had announced plans to kill some baboons last year because the population had exceeded 40. Other zoos where baboons had been sent had also reached full capacity, and contraception methods had failed. The zoo director, Dag Encke, said that the culling of animals can be the “legitimate last resort to preserve the population,” but animal rights groups disputed the claim and filed a criminal complaint against the zoo.
