Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have received red carpet welcomes upon their arrival in China, joining over 20 leaders at a regional security summit. This event, organized by the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), is taking place in the port of Tianjin, just days before a major military parade in Beijing that commemorates the 80th anniversary of World War II.
Modi, who is visiting China for the first time in seven years, had discussions with China’s President Xi before the summit’s opening. Modi expressed India’s desire to strengthen ties with its neighboring nation. These diplomatic efforts come during a challenging time as India faces tariffs imposed by the United States as a consequence of purchasing Russian oil, and Putin is facing possible sanctions due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Modi’s message to Xi emphasized the importance of mutual trust, dignity, and sensitivity in enhancing India-China relationships. He highlighted how enhancing cooperation between the two countries would benefit not just their combined 2.8 billion citizens, but also contribute to the welfare of humanity as a whole.
The SCO, originally formed in 2001 by China, Russia, and four Central Asian nations to counter Western alliances like NATO, now counts 10 member countries including Pakistan, Iran, and Belarus. An additional 16 nations participate as dialogue partners and observers, making the summit a significant geopolitical gathering. However, this year’s summit takes place amidst ongoing trade tensions, most notably with the United States.
While the summit itself is largely symbolic, it provides a platform for leaders to voice mutual concerns and issues of common interest, likely overshadowed by the ongoing trade disputes with the US. A significant milestone for the SCO, this gathering marks the largest since its inception. The expectant gathering just precedes a grand military parade in Beijing, celebrating the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.
