Calin Georgescu, a far-right populist from Romania, has been prohibited from taking part in the upcoming May presidential election rerun by the nation’s Central Electoral Bureau. In December, Romania’s constitutional court invalidated the initial round of voting – where he led – after evidence showed Russia’s involvement in 800 TikTok accounts supporting him.
The bureau reportedly rejected his candidacy due to so-called “procedural issues,” without offering any further explanation. Georgescu labeled the decision as a “direct blow” to democracy. He now has a 24-hour window, starting from Sunday’s announcement, to submit an official appeal. A ruling on the appeal is expected within 72 hours.
