Impeached president of South Korea, Yoon Suk Yeol, has been released from detention after a court in Seoul ruled that his arrest was based on technical errors. Although still facing trial on insurrection charges due to his failed attempt to impose martial law in December, Yoon walked free on Saturday to the cheers of his supporters. He was initially arrested in January during a dawn raid at the presidential palace, after refusing to be taken in and engaging in clashes with the police. Upon his release, Yoon expressed his gratitude to the nation for its support. He was then driven back to the presidential compound in Seoul, where he was greeted by more supporters. Over 50,000 protesters rallied in his support on Saturday, while a smaller counter-protest took place. The court decision to release him was based on legal technicalities, despite prosecutors describing it as “unjust.” Yoon’s attempt to place the country under martial law, even if only for six hours, has deeply divided the nation. If convicted, he could face life imprisonment or even the death penalty. Although currently suspended from office, Yoon still holds the title of president. A separate ruling from the Constitutional Court will determine whether his impeachment will be upheld and if he will be formally stripped of office, a decision expected in the coming days. Despite the ongoing court cases, Yoon’s supporters have rallied around him, leading authorities to prepare for possible unrest.
