Donald Trump stated that Volodymyr Zelensky, along with Russian President Vladimir Putin, is accountable for the loss of “millions of lives” due to the conflict in Ukraine. During his meeting with El Salvador’s leader at the White House, Trump also blamed former US President Joe Biden for the conflict.
Trump’s comments were made in response to a recent Russian attack on civilians, resulting in widespread condemnation. The attack occurred when missiles struck the city of Sumy in northeastern Ukraine on Sunday.
Trump previously referred to the Russian attack as a “mistake” and stated that “millions of people died due to three individuals.” He specifically mentioned Putin, Biden, and Zelensky as the responsible parties.
However, it is estimated that hundreds of thousands, rather than millions, of people have been killed or injured since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Trump questioned Zelensky’s competence by highlighting his focus on purchasing missiles. He argued that starting a war against a much stronger opponent and subsequently relying on others for support was unrealistic.
Tensions between Trump and Zelensky have intensified ever since their heated confrontation at the White House in February. In an interview before Russia’s latest attack, Zelensky urged Trump to visit Ukraine and witness the consequences of the war before engaging in negotiations.
The Russian attack on Sumy reportedly resulted in at least 35 deaths and 117 injuries. Moscow claims that they fired two Iskander missiles at a meeting of Ukrainian soldiers, killing 60 of them. However, no evidence has been provided to support this claim.
Trump stated his desire to “stop the killing” and hinted at the upcoming proposal of potential solutions, but he did not provide further details.
