Two or more individuals, including children, have lost their lives and a total of 54 have been injured due to a Russian missile and drone strike on Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital. Mayor Vitali Klitschko claims that falling debris from drones caused various fires throughout the city. Concerns have grown as there are suspicions that individuals may still be trapped under the remains of a demolished residential structure.
Ukraine’s State Emergency Service (DSNS) reported that nine people have been confirmed dead, with a total of 63 individuals injured based on preliminary data.
Explosions were also witnessed by local officials in Kharkiv, a northeastern city that also faced a similar attack. At least two people sustained injuries in this incident.
According to a social media post by Mayor Klitschko, six children and a pregnant woman were among those injured during the Russian attack. He mentioned that fires occurred at six different locations, and that there are individuals trapped under the ruins of a destroyed apartment building. Rescue teams have been seen going through the debris to search for survivors.
The western Svyatoshynskyi district of the capital bore the brunt of the impact, as reported by Klitschko. Footage taken from social media appears to show missiles hitting the city, resulting in massive fires.
In Kharkiv, approximately 40 kilometers (25 miles) away from the Russian border, two people were injured, and Mayor Ihor Terekhov stated that private houses sustained damage during the Russian missile and drone attack.
Ukraine’s air force raised an alert claiming that almost all regions in the country are at risk of air attacks.
The Russian military has not made any comments regarding these reported attacks.
