The UK’s decision to suspend some aid to Rwanda is being described as “punitive” by authorities in East Africa. In a statement, the UK explained that the move was due to Rwanda’s support for the M23, a rebel group that has captured large areas of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo in a violent uprising. Rwanda had previously denied backing the M23, but has recently adopted a more defensive stance, arguing that fighting near the border between DR Congo and Rwanda poses a threat to its security. The conflict since January has resulted in over 7,000 deaths and hundreds of thousands of people fleeing their homes, according to DR Congo’s government.
