The Trump administration is in discussions with Turkey and South Korea regarding the import of eggs to address record-high prices in the United States. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins informed reporters at the White House that they are considering importing hundreds of millions of eggs in the short term. This move follows the government’s announcement of a $1 billion plan to combat a bird flu epidemic that has led to the culling of large numbers of chickens. Despite President Trump’s campaign promise to reduce prices, the cost of eggs has increased by over 65% in the last year and is expected to rise by 41% in 2025. Rollins also mentioned ongoing talks with other countries to secure new supplies, with the aim of shifting back to domestic egg production once chicken populations are replenished. Polish and Lithuanian poultry associations have also been approached by US embassies regarding possible egg exports. The US Department of Agriculture has already unveiled a plan to tackle the price of eggs, which includes investing in biosecurity measures, vaccine research, and financial relief programs for farmers. The avian flu has been causing significant damage to poultry flocks, resulting in the death of over 156 million birds and a surge in egg prices. Trump has made lowering egg prices a priority and has blamed his predecessor, Joe Biden, for the current situation.
