The remains of an indigenous woman, Morgan Harris, who was murdered by a serial killer have been discovered at the Prairie Green Landfill, located north of Winnipeg in Manitoba, Canada. Along with Harris, police were searching for Marcedes Myran, both from Long Plain First Nation. Two sets of remains have been found. Harris and Myran were two of the four indigenous women killed in 2022 by Jeremy Skibicki, who dumped their bodies in two different landfills over a three-month period.
The search for remains at the Prairie Green Landfill started late last year after a prolonged campaign by indigenous leaders. Initially, police had declined to search the landfill due to concerns over potential hazards and costs, but Manitoba later committed to a search funded by both the provincial and federal governments.
Skibicki was convicted in July last year of the murders of Harris and Myran, as well as Rebecca Contois and an unidentified woman called Buffalo Woman. The murders went unnoticed for months until a man found partial human remains while searching for scrap metal.
Canada has been grappling with the long-standing issue of missing and murdered indigenous women and girls. According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), indigenous women represent 10% of the missing women population in Canada and 16% of female homicides, while only making up about 4% of the female population in the country.
