Vietnamese singer Duc Phuc has emerged victorious at the Intervision song contest hosted in Moscow. Out of 23 countries, including those from the former Soviet era, who took part in this competition, which was revived by President Vladimir Putin after Russia’s ban from Eurovision due to its invasion of Ukraine, Duc Phuc was the standout winner. Putin expressed his hope that the event would become “one of the most recognisable and beloved events in the world”. However, the Ukrainian government responded by calling Intervision 2025 “an instrument of hostile propaganda and a means of whitewashing the aggressive policy of the Russian Federation”. While China and India participated, controversy ensued as Australian-born singer Vassy, who represented the US, withdrew her participation due to “unprecedented political pressure from the Government of Australia”, according to the organisers.
