When the world learned of Pope Francis’ death on Monday morning, Irish-American Cardinal Kevin Farrell took on one of his biggest roles yet: the “camerlengo”, or the person who runs the Vatican after the death or resignation of a pope. He also held other important roles before being nominated for the position in 2019 by Pope Francis

Pope Francis also chose him as president of the Supreme Court of Vatican City State in 2023 and president of the Commission for Confidential Matters. After the death of the pontiff, he will preside over several important ceremonies and the conclave to select the next pope.
