In a heartwarming and defying instance of Filipino resilience, Jamaica Aguilar did not let heavy rains and flooding stop her wedding day at Barasoain Church, north of the Philippine capital Manila. Despite being almost knee-deep in floodwaters due to a monsoon and typhoon, the couple continued with their ceremony, showcasing the usual scene of a wedding except for the waterlogged setting. This occurrence, however, wasn’t an isolated incident, as two years earlier a different couple had a similar experience in the same church, illustrating a recurring problem with floods in the region that persist due to sewage systems and urban planning shortfalls, exacerbated by extreme weather events. Following their nuptials, the couple took doxycycline pills as a preventive measure against flood-borne diseases like leptospirosis, a liver attack. Additionally, a funeral was held shortly after the wedding at the flooded church, featuring a white casket placed on stilts.
