An American teenager’s attempt to fly his small plane to every continent has been delayed after Chilean authorities detained him on an Antarctic island following the submission of a false flight plan. Ethan Guo, 19, deviated from his flight plan in the air, triggering alert protocols according to Chile’s General Directorate of Civil Aeronautics. Mr. Guo was taken into custody after landing on King George Island, which houses international research stations and typically experiences freezing temperatures in July. His Cessna 182 aircraft took off from Punta Arenas, near the southernmost point of Chile, and flew to the island off the Atlantic coast, named after England’s King George III. He was detained at Teniente R. Marsh airport, accused of violating Chile’s aeronautical code, which could lead to short-term imprisonment, and the Antarctic Treaty. Mr. Guo updated on X that he would make an announcement soon.
