Eight people were killed and two others were injured in a shooting outside a nightclub in southwestern Ecuador, according to police.
Police Colonel Javier Chango stated at a press conference that seven people died at the scene, while the eighth victim later succumbed to their injuries in the hospital. The incident occurred in Santa Lucia, a town in the Guayas province, which is under a two-month state of emergency declared by President Daniel Noboa to address gang violence.
An unknown number of gunmen arrived in two pickup trucks and opened fire on people outside the Napoles nightclub at 1:15 am local time. After the attack, they fled along an unknown route, and police found 800 cartridge cases at the scene. The nightclub’s owner, Jorge Urquizo, who is also the brother of Santa Lucia’s mayor, was among the dead. Police have not yet determined the motive behind the shooting.
Ecuador recorded 4,619 homicides in the first half of 2025, marking a 47% increase compared to the same period last year.
