Early Sunday morning, rescue workers discovered the body of a man during a search conducted by local firefighters and police, as reported by Madrid’s Emergency Services on X.
On Saturday night, the emergency services stated that two victims were in “serious” condition, while three were considered “potentially serious”.
Firefighter chief Javier Romero mentioned that four individuals were rescued from the rubble alive.
Causes of the Madrid bar explosion
Local media reported that a gas leak led to the explosion at the “Mis Tesoros” bar at 3 p.m. (1300 UTC/GMT) in the Puente de Vallecas district of Madrid.
According to the newspaper El Pais, Carlos Marin, the head of the Madrid City Council Fire Department, stated that it was a gas explosion, but they were unable to specify the type of gas, the cause, or the exact location of the explosion.
Inmaculada Sanz, the deputy mayor and delegate for security and emergencies at Madrid town hall, mentioned that it was “too early to determine what caused the explosion”.
More information about the Madrid blast
Sanz stated that the residents of the nine housing units in the building “will have to be rehoused for at least a few days”.
The building housing the bar is reportedly “currently unstable”, according to Marin from the City Council Fire Department.
Although some upper apartments were not damaged, the affected area is the entrance, which means “access to the building is completely impossible”, Marin stated.
