A man accused of setting his wife ablaze on a tram in Germany has surrendered to authorities. The 46-year-old assailant turned himself in at the Gera police station. His wife, who is also 46, suffered severe burns after being doused with a flammable liquid and set alight on Sunday morning; fortunately, no bystanders were hurt. The police are treating the case as a probable murder attempt.
Witnesses pressed the tram’s emergency stop, allowing the suspect to flee, but the driver quickly responded by trying to extinguish the flames with a fire extinguisher. The victim received immediate aid at the scene before being transported to a hospital. Both the passengers and the tram driver have been provided with psychological support. Gera is located in the east of the Thuringia state, about 60 kilometers south of Leipzig.
