A US federal judge issued a temporary blockade on Thursday against President Donald Trump’s ban on transgender military troops, marking the second nationwide injunction in two weeks.
US District Court Judge Benjamin Settle ruled that removing transgenic service members would cause “irreparable harm to their military service careers that they have chosen” and criticized the administration’s inadequate justification for the ban.
The government’s arguments were deemed unconvincing, and the decision was highly clear based on the current record, Settle wrote.
Thursday’s ruling followed a similar order issued by US District Judge Ana Reyes in Washington, DC last week, temporarily blocking the ban on transgender troops. Reyes ruled that the government cannot enforce the ban, which was challenged by current and prospective service members who labeled the policy as discriminatory.
The order was temporarily frozen pending an emergency motion by the Trump administration to enforce the ban while appeals were pending.
In a separate ruling in New Jersey, two transgender airmen were protected, but the order did not apply to the entire military.
