Sixteen European consumer groups have called on the European Union to take action against seven low-cost airlines for their baggage fees. The European Consumer Organisation, BEUC, accuses these airlines of misleading passengers and creating confusion and distress at check-ins. The groups say that charging extra for baggage that doesn’t match airline guidelines is a breach of EU law. Passengers can pay up to €280 extra to take on a suitcase. The BEUC wants the European Commission and national consumer authorities to investigate and enforce sanctions. BEUC argues that a standard luggage allowance should be included within the ticket purchase. Ryanair and Norwegian have responded, saying their rules and fees are in compliance with EU law. Volotea and Transavia referred to an industry statement that argued the action taken by consumer organizations would decrease consumer choice.
