US artificial intelligence (AI) giant Anthropic agrees to pay at least $1.5 billion (€1.3 billion) to settle a class-action lawsuit filed by authors, according to court documents released on Friday.
“This settlement is the largest copyright recovery on record and is unprecedented in the AI sector,” stated plaintiffs’ attorney Justin Nelson.
Three authors, Andrea Bartz, Charles Graeber, and Kirk Wallace Johnson, initiated the lawsuit last year, alleging that Anthropic used pirated books to train its AI chatbot, Claude, a significant competitor to OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
The settlement covers approximately 500,000 books, with each affected work receiving around $3,000 (€2,500).
Mary Rasenberger, CEO of the Authors Guild, praised the settlement, stating it sends a strong message to the AI industry regarding the severe consequences of copyright infringement, particularly when it impacts authors’ ability to earn an income.
Several similar lawsuits are currently in progress against technology companies, including OpenAI and Meta.
Copyright holders contend that unauthorized use of copyrighted content infringes upon intellectual property rights.
