The UK-based human rights organization Amnesty International has expressed deep concern about the current state of universal human rights worldwide, emphasizing that we are at a critical juncture for these rights. According to Amnesty International’s report, religious, patriarchal, and racist attacks are eroding the system of human rights conventions, universal human rights, international humanitarian law, and international courts that were established after the atrocities of the Nazis and World War Two.
Agnes Callamard, International Secretary General of Amnesty International, warns that “unprecedented forces are hunting down the ideals of human rights for all, seeking to destroy an international system forged in the blood and grief of World War Two and its Holocaust.” Every year, the organization assesses human rights in 150 countries.
Among the key trends identified in the report are the increasing violence against civilians and minorities, including those from the LGBTQ+ community, refugees, and dissidents. Additionally, states, including those traditionally committed to universal human rights, such as the United States, are increasingly failing to address this crisis in human rights. The US government’s actions have been described as exacerbating the situation, with sanctions against the International Criminal Court and the US’ withdrawal from the UN Human Rights Council being likened to taking an ax to international law.
The conflict in Israel and Gaza, which has resulted in the loss of tens of thousands of lives, is a particular focus of the report, with Amnesty International accusing Israel of committing “genocide” against Palestinians. The allegations, while controversial, highlight the dire humanitarian situation in the region and calls for immediate action to protect the rights of Palestinians.
Furthermore, the ongoing crisis in Sudan, marked by a humanitarian disaster and widespread violation of human rights, is another critical issue addressed in the report. The NGO calls for an arms embargo and criticism of both the government and rebel groups involved in the conflict.
Germany also faces criticism for its handling of immigrants and refugees, as well as the excessive use of force in policing protests by climate activists and supporters of Palestinians’ rights.
In conclusion, Amnesty International is calling for a return to a rules-based order that respects human rights and international law, emphasizing the need for commitment from all members of society to uphold these principles.
