“Anora” received a total of five Academy Awards on Sunday, including the top honors for best picture and best director.
The event, which came back to the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, was presented for the first time by comedian Conan O’Brien. Firefighters involved in the January wildfires that swept across LA were acknowledged on stage during the ceremony.
Adrien Brody won best actor for his role in the film, portraying Hungarian immigrant and Holocaust survivor László Tóth. In his acceptance speech, he addressed the fragility of the acting profession and emphasized the importance of retaining perspective. He also spoke about the need to combat hate and build a more inclusive world.
Zoe Saldaña earned the best supporting actress award for her portrayal of lawyer Rita in Netflix’s “Emilia Perez.” It was her first Oscar win after a 26-year career, and she became emotional as she dedicated her victory to her immigrant parents, specifically her grandmother who came to the United States in 1961.
Kieran Culkin won best supporting actor for his work in “A Real Pain,” where he played one of two cousins exploring their Jewish family heritage. Culkin announced during his acceptance speech that his wife had promised to have four children if he won an Oscar.
Shirin Sohani and Hossein Molayemi received their first Academy Award for their animated short film “In the Shadow of the Cypress,” making history as the first Iranian animated or live-action short film to win the prestigious award.
