Arab leaders are gathering in Cairo on Tuesday for an urgent summit to discuss plans for the potential reconstruction of the war-torn Gaza Strip. Arab foreign ministers convened in the Egyptian capital on Monday to develop a strategy for rebuilding the territory without displacing its inhabitants, as reported by AFP, citing a source from the Arab League.
This plan will be presented to Arab League leaders, including those from Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar. The European Union Council President Antonio Costa is also expected to attend. The initiatives under discussion at Tuesday’s summit aim to counter US President Donald Trump’s proposal to assume ownership of Gaza and redevelop it after relocating approximately 2 million Palestinian people to neighboring Arab countries.
Trump had previously presented an artificial intelligence video depicting the transformation of the devastated Gaza into the “Riviera of the Middle East,” a concept praised as “visionary” by Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu but met with widespread criticism. The United Nations estimates the cost of rebuilding Gaza to be around $53 billion (€50.5 billion).
Although the full extent of the damage will only be ascertained once inspectors can fully access the territory, satellite data suggests that nearly 70% of all structures in Gaza have been damaged or destroyed, including over 245,000 homes. Additionally, the UN estimates that the war has resulted in over 50 million tons of rubble in Gaza, roughly 12 times the size of the Great Pyramid of Giza.
