When the European Union and Israel held formal talks, it typically signals a warming of ties, as seen in previous meetings like the one in 2022 or a decade prior. However, the recent gathering in Brussels, instigated by a push from two EU states, differed in that it was not aimed at boosting cooperation but prompted by a review of trade and ties with Israel regarding its actions in Gaza, which may be considered as war crimes and crimes against humanity, as indicated by the International Criminal Court.
According to EU sources, the meeting was not intended to serve as a tribunal for Israel but to maintain dialogue without condemnation. The association council meeting saw months of negotiations among the 27 EU countries, ranging from Israel critics to supporters, in order to reach the necessary compromises to convene since Hamas’ October 7 terror attacks.
The EU reiterated its unwavering support for the ICC but acknowledged that enforcing the court’s warrants rests with member states. Israel disputes the accusations and argues that the court’s decisions are based on prejudices aimed at undermining the country’s right to protect itself.
