A 39-year-old woman named Susanne Meier, who works for Bhutan Travel in Moosburg, Bavaria, is not deterred by high tourist taxes in Bhutan. Despite Bhutan’s Sustainable Development Fee — the world’s highest tourist tax, charging visitors $100 (€95) per person per day — and additional costs for required travel services, such as a driver and guide, Meier sees the tax’s benefits. She observes that tourists are generally pleased to pay the tax when they understand that it supports Bhutan’s development and slow tourism approach. The tax revenue is utilized for healthcare, education, infrastructure, environmental conservation, and local businesses, amounting to $26 million (€25 million) in 2023 earnings. However, this tax also acts as a deterrent, with just over 100,000 tourists visiting Bhutan in 2023.
