Brazil’s federal police announced on Wednesday that they have evidence pointing to the former President Jair Bolsonaro’s attempts to flee the country to Argentina to seek political asylum. The information was contained in a 170-page report in which it was stated that Bolsonaro had authored a letter requesting asylum, dated February 10, 2024. The letter, discovered on a seized cell phone, included claims that he was facing political persecution in Brazil and was in fear for his life.
The Argentine government has not yet responded to these allegations. Additionally, the police have recommended charges of obstruction of justice against Bolsonaro and his son, accusing them of trying to interfere with a trial related to the alleged plotting of a coup. The recommended charges include coercion in the judicial process and the abolition of democratic law.
Meanwhile, Brazil’s Supreme Court has recently ordered Bolsonaro to be placed under house arrest as he stands trial for allegedly being involved in a coup attempt following his loss in the 2022 election to Brazil’s current President, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. The Supreme Court also required Bolsonaro to wear an electronic ankle monitor and imposed a curfew on his activities during the trial. He was also banned from using social media to prevent the disruption of the trial with inflammatory speeches.
