Bangladehi authorities recently apprehended the leader of the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA), Ataullah Abu Ammar Jununi, who is implicated in attacks against Myanmar’s security forces. The 48-year-old was taken into custody near the capital, Dhaka, along with additional associates, on allegations of murder and sabotage. The group has a history of insurgency aiming to protect the persecuted Rohingya minority, with Jununi at the helm since 2016. He’s credited with orchestrating the 2017 attacks on security posts that instigated a harsh military response in Myanmar, displacing thousands of Rohingya to Bangladesh. Jununi is facing additional charges for murdering a Bangladeshi intelligence officer and involvement in criminal activities such as drug smuggling, kidnappings, extortion, and torture within refugee camps.
