Antenna Baerbock, newly appointed President of the United Nations General Assembly, mentioned the possibility of deploying UN peacekeeping forces to Ukraine to secure a ceasefire. She stated that if a majority of UN member states support this measure, Blue Helmets could play a crucial role in establishing lasting peace in the region.

Baerbock, who took office on September 9, believes that peace missions are essential at this time, not only for the European continent but also globally.

UN peacekeeping forces, known as Blue Helmets, consist of military personnel from member states who are tasked to work under the command and control of the United Nations.

However, a UN peacekeeping mission in Ukraine largely depends on Moscow’s approval. The UN Security Council authorizes such missions, but Russia’s veto power could block the deployment of Blue Helmets to Ukraine.

Negotiations for a ceasefire have been ongoing, but so far, they have not been successful. Russia insists that the conflict’s “root causes” – Ukraine’s NATO and European Union aspirations – must be addressed before peace talks can proceed.

Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, following its previous support for separatists in eastern Ukraine since 2014 and the annexation of the Crimean peninsula.

Baerbock officially assumed her role as the president of the United Nations General Assembly, a mainly ceremonial position distinct from the UN Secretary-General.
