Canada has requested the Group of Seven (G7) countries to provide support to Ukraine against Russia’s aggressive actions. The foreign ministers of the G7, consisting of Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United States, are currently gathering for three days of negotiations at a hotel in Charlevoix, Quebec, situated along the banks of the St. Lawrence River.
Once relatively united, the G7 has experienced divisions since the return of US President Donald Trump. Trump has engaged in outreach toward Russia and has imposed strict trade tariffs on both close allies and competitors.
Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly, who initiated the official G7 meeting, expressed her goal of finding ways to continue supporting Ukraine in the face of Russia’s unlawful aggression. Joly emphasized the collective desire for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.
However, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has encouraged the G7 to avoid using antagonistic language toward Russia. He believes such language would hinder US diplomacy efforts aimed at ending the conflict that has already claimed the lives of tens of thousands of people.
During talks in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, Ukraine, while facing pressure from the US which briefly halted aid, aligned with Rubio’s stance and agreed to consider a US proposal for a 30-day cease-fire with Russia.
