During Israel’s ongoing military campaign against Hamas, the humanitarian situation in Gaza remains desperate, according to aid organizations. The region has experienced nearly 22 months of conflict.
A UN report reveals that over 2 million people in Gaza are facing a devastating famine. Jorge Moreira da Silva, the executive director of the United Nations Office for Project Services or UN OPS, which organizes the delivery of humanitarian aid, expressed his concern to DW about the situation on the ground.
“It’s time to end this. It’s simply unbearable and I sincerely hope that political will prevails because war is… war is a choice, just as peace is a choice, it’s time to bring peace to Gaza,” he emphasized.
In response to the international criticism over Gaza’s food crisis, Israel has implemented a daytime pause in military operations on secure routes and in densely populated areas since last weekend to enhance aid delivery and distribution.
Some countries have even announced airlift missions to provide humanitarian aid to the territory. However, da Silva stated that while the recent improvements are minimal, they are just a fraction of what the people truly need.
He also called for the UN to be reinstated in its key role of aid delivery and distribution. “We simply need to bring back the UN. With the UN, none of what we are witnessing would have happened,” he stated, referring to the violence that plagued the aid system run by the Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF).
