Cardinal Prevost of the United States to become Pope Leo XIV, leading the Catholic Church – DW – 05/09/2025

In the annals of papal history, Pope Leo I, also known as Leo the Great, stands as one of the most renowned among those who bore the name. Serving as the Bishop of Rome from A.D. 440 until his death in A.D. 461, his legacy has endured the test of time, marking him as the first of the three popes honored with the title “the Great” by the Annuario Pontificio, alongside Popes Gregory I and Nicholas I.

One of his most significant theological contributions was the composition of the Tome of Leo, a pivotal document that served as a cornerstone for the theological debates at the Council of Chalcedon, the Fourth Ecumenical Council. His influence extended beyond theological matters when, in 452, he successfully persuaded Attila the Hun to withdraw from his invasion of Italy, an act that demonstrated his diplomatic acumen and courage.

Centuries later, Pope Saint Leo III, who served from 795 to 816, made history by crowning Charlemagne as Emperor in 800. This act not only revived the Western Roman Empire but also established a precedent for future popes in crowning emperors, a tradition that endured throughout the Holy Roman Empire.

Transitioning into the Renaissance era, Pope Leo X, born as Lorenzo de’ Medici, stood as one of the quintessential figures of the papacy during this time, ruling from 1513 until his death in 1521. His papacy saw Rome transform into a cultural and political hub, yet it was also marred by the depletion of the papal treasury and an inability to halt the burgeoning Reformation. Despite these challenges, Leo X remains infamous for his hedonisticquote, “Since God has given us the papacy, let us enjoy it,” which encapsulates the extravagance of his reign.

Each of these pontiffs, bearing the name Leo, has left indelible marks on history, reflecting a blend of spiritual leadership, political sagacity, and, in some cases, personal excesses that continue to be studied and remembered.
