A powerful earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale struck eastern Afghanistan near the Pakistan border late on Sunday, causing the collapse of at least two homes and resulting in two deaths and fifteen injuries according to initial reports from authorities. The earthquake’s epicenter was located near Jalalabad in Nangarhar province, approximately 119 kilometers (74 miles) from the capital city, Kabul. The quake occurred at a depth of 8 kilometers (6 miles) and struck the region at 11:47 p.m. local time (9:17 p.m. CET). A series of subsequent earthquakes followed, including a 4.5 and 5.2 magnitude quake shortly afterwards. Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid stated that ongoing rescue efforts are currently being undertaken by local officials and residents, with additional support teams from Kabul and nearby provinces deploying to affected areas. October 2023’s 6.3 magnitude earthquake, which claimed over 2,000 lives, remains the deadliest natural disaster to strike Afghanistan in recent memory.
