China and Japan have reached an agreement to resume the importation of seafood from Japan, after a two-year ban imposed by China. The ban was implemented due to concerns over the discharge of treated wastewater from the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the sea. The agreement on the resumption of seafood exports will take effect once China completes the necessary procedures. China has expressed its intention to officially announce the resumption of exports from areas outside the Fukushima region. The decision to halt the import of Japanese seafood was made in 2023 by China, citing the potential risks posed to its fishing industry and coastal communities. Despite Japan’s assurance that the discharge meets international safety standards, China had stopped importing seafood from Japan.
