Cuba’s national electrical grid has experienced a complete failure after a significant malfunction at a substation, causing widespread blackouts across a large portion of western Cuba, including the capital, Havana. According to the Ministry of Energy and Mines, the breakdown occurred around 8:15 p.m., leading to a substantial power loss and the collapse of the country’s electricity system. As a result, the entire waterfront skyline of Havana was plunged into darkness, with only a few tourist hotels operating on generators. Social media reports from across the nation indicate that millions of people are without power. This incident comes on the heels of a series of nationwide blackouts in late 2024, which had already disrupted Cuba’s aging power infrastructure, leading to hours-long rolling blackouts that have become a recurring issue.
