Deutsche Welle transmits the International Classical Music Awards – DW – 19th March 2025

The International Classical Music Awards (ICMA) is set to celebrate the best in classical music with its annual gala event on March 19, featuring performances by renowned artists and newcomers at Düsseldorf’s Tonhalle. The entire concert will be broadcast live on DW Classical Music’s YouTube channel starting at 8 p.m. CET.

Each year, the ICMA takes place in a different city—this year’s host is Germany, following Valencia, Spain, which hosted the event last year. The awards themselves are considered among the most prestigious in the classical music industry, with jurors from 16 countries evaluating an extensive array of 20,000 albums annually across various categories to recognize exceptional releases.

The Artist of the Year award goes to conductor and harpsichordist Leonardo García Alarcón, with the Rising Star award being presented to 26-year-old cellist Benjamin Kruithof. Violinist Gidon Kremer will be honored with a Lifetime Achievement award. The concert will feature works by composers such as Mozart, Handel, Vivaldi, and Tchaikovsky, with Kremer performing pieces by Ukrainian composers Valentin Silvestrov and Viktor Kosenko, underscoring the power of music in supporting those in need.

DW Classical Music, Deutsche Welle’s classical music channel on YouTube, will stream the event for the fourth time, aiming to reach hundreds of thousands of music lovers worldwide. The previous year’s broadcast of the winners’ concert from Wroclaw, Poland, was viewed by almost 2 million people. The live stream seeks to share the excitement of the awards with a global audience, highlighting the richness and diversity of classical music.
